Feedback, imaging, and The Pub.

Just saw this one:

http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/solid-state/193143-feedback-affects-soundstage-imaging-transients.html

Some of you may have heard this story before, but tough.

Years ago, the reason I got into "zero feedback" is that we (and yes, Phred was part of this, even though he may not remember) found when we reduced the loop feedback, the soundstage became deeper. Not sure if this effect is more likely to happen on Maggies, and since we all had Maggies, we had no way (or even interest) to see if it did the same, on box speakers. But, I can tell you, with 100% results.................yeah, I know, anecdotal, blah, blah, no DBT, etc. (shove it, ok), everyone agreed the soundstage became deeper. Phred would comment "It doesn't sound like it is stuck on the panel."

So, may not work the same on your box speakers (I kinda sorta think it does, but that is for you to find out), but that is why everything I build has no feedback.

Actually, it does work on box speakers.....................

Mid 90s or so, we did a mod, to the amps we used to make. It used a CFP output stage. Same as Threshold, Rowland, and I am sure other companies. Went to a diamond buffer.................modded every amp we could get back. I did hear a few. Same effect.............deeper soundstage.

Now, it may be anecdotal, but no one ever said "It sucks. Put it back."

Which is good, because it would have meant a refund. (And the money was probably already spent.) So, if the customer likes it, and they have the option of either, I bet most would rather go for the one that doesn't cost anything.

Instead, they went for the one that sounded best.

And I you don't believe me, then you are worse than Hitler.

Yes, Hitler!

"Take him out and shoot him."
"Sir?"
"I said take him out and shoot him. Can't you hear?"

It's amazing how quickly those threads get swarmed.

No double blind testing was used in the making of this post.
