This guy might know something................

BBC noise fill test is a very complex "multitone" IMD test, slew rate, power bandwidth were standard amplifier tests - even if JC wants to claim they were only brought to "audio" engineers atttention in the 70s - the tests, limitations they measure in electronic cricuit were known to engineering in the large sense - Volterra series, complex IMD were used early in RF engineering,

And most folks think "NPR" is some really boring radio network. (Well, that NPR is.)

I have 'splained this concept, to lots of my famous audio designer buddies. The "deer in the headlights" look was priceless.

Of course, a decade or so later, and they can buy some over-priced gizmo, that has this elaborate multi-tone IM test..........

Phase III: "We developed it."

(Insert "rolls eyes" smiley thingie, here.)

If I only had a $ for every "bucket curve" I ran...............

There was this one gizmo..............I think it was a baseband amp, of some sorts...........lots of 7th order. You got a few dB above its designed operating point, and the bucket curve went straight up.

Well, not exactly. 1:7 dB ratio. Just what you would expect for 7th order. I won't say what hallowed radio company made this POC. Or whether, or not, I ever worked there. I'm sure someone will guess.

The name of the company. Not whether I worked there, or not. Since that is a binary choice, it doesn't count.

Wasn't the ink on the NPR graphing units the worst ever?  It got friggin everywhere.  Everywhere.  And that's if you didn't have an accident.

Did you ever see an SA NPR test set that wasn't its native green splotted with red?

We have a name around her for that look...

I guess we were lucky...............we couldn't afford any S-A gear!

OK, we did have a TDR, for finding problems in waveguide. No one could figure out how it worked. Yes, I could have, but that would have meant going to the field. And possibly climbing towers. Most jobs had "hazardous duty pay", for crap like that. No money, no climbee tower.

Anyway, everyone just called it "that damn radar machine". I don't remember what it used for a readout/display. I know it didn't have a CRT. Probably just a voltmeter, of some sort. Yeah, I can see that would screw some folks up.

Managed to get a job interview there. Didn't manage to get a job.

Back to NPR..........

We had to do all that by hand. Once we took the data, someone got the job of making the plots. Since I was the only guy who had any drafting experience, or tools (especially a French curve), I always got to do it.

This thing only had mechanical damping, and damped little of that.  (Slipped one by without the font...)  So, as it slogged up in baseband frequency, the pen vibrated back and forth with the noise.  When you got to one of the slots, you knew you were doing well when you heard it bang against the stop at the bottom of the graph paper.

Getting the kind of linearity that was needed over the band for an FDM mastergroup was pretty tricky...

Hmmm...........do we have to install a "font rule"? I hope not. Good one, though. I think the font rule would ruin it. But, part of the reason I started with the [joke] thing, over at The Pub, is that a lot of the readers were from Europe, and there was no way they got a lot of them.

I can attest to that, based on my hate mail.

After I told them it was a joke, the hate mail switched to "Why do you have to make a joke out of everything? You are not as funny as you think you are." I knew I was onto something, at that point.

BTW, I am. So, there. Deal with it.

O/T, but another guy who has hit the nail on the head:

Quote
Some Guys here seem really to be lawyers picking and fighting single words here and there while they do not hear what someone is saying.

I wonder who he is talking about?

Example of a guy who only thinks he knows what he is talking about:

Quote
I hear changes and differences. I try to find out why they exist, and once I figure out what differences show up in a measurement, I am pleased that I can then quantify the effect.

So, if he can not quantify it, it never existed.

I wonder if he gets paid by the word.

Anatech, give it a break. Listen to your wife (yes I refer to your signature).

His days are numbered. Someone needs to invite him over here, while he can still be contacted.

Then maybe you really should listen what your wife says.

WOW!  Elsewhere, some guys have discovered a new test for distortion!  They apply broadband noise with a small portion of the band notched out.  Then they analyze what they see in the notch.

Again, WOW!!   >:(
