I'm wondering if those famous designers even heard of depletion mode MOSFETs and their use as CCS. Or even better, as cascoded CCS. Why are they using 317 3-pin reg as CCS, did they never read Walt Jung's great articles and his warning about
excessive noise
?
Since they are talking about 50 or 60 mA and droping only a few Volts, for us EU guys BSP129 and BSP149 are easy obtainable from Farnell and for US guys even more parts available from Mouser (Supertex parts).

That is why it is "minimalist". Refers to amount of thinking, that was done. Original, or otherwise.
